Nightlife Stories

An oral history of San Francisco nightlife

I’m working on an oral history project about San Francisco nightlife and parties in the 1980s and 1990s.

In this era, San Francisco was still a center for counterculture, and the queer and punk scenes were connected, vibrant and political. This project is an oral history about the nightlife and party scene from that era.

The stories of the communities from these times are tremendously valuable. Here, punks and queers were able to create connected neighborhoods and chosen families, the art, and music, and push boundaries around sex and drugs and fashion, creating a world outside of the comfortable mainstream.

If you were in San Francisco in the 80’s or 90s, and partied, I’d love to talk to you. Sign up here or email me at hexagonbex@gmail.com. Thanks!
